Apple and Facebook partner up for back-to-school iTunes promo - Mp4 Converter

Updated July 27,2006

Amongst many exciting things announced today in Apple-land is a partnership between Facebook and Apple to start giving away 10 million music samplers on the iTunes Music Store to Facebook users over the next ten weeks, in an effort to get college kids and alumni all over the country enthusiastic about both services as fall classes draw near. Facebook and Apple will be giving away one million 25-song sampler compilations each week all the way through the end of September. For those of us who've spent way too much time out of college, that's 25 songs x 10 million = 250 million songs being given away, total.

Facebook is, of course, the MySpace-like site geared towards colleges and universities that allows you to browse and build a social network based around your university, specific classes, and extremely educational after-school activities, amongst other things. Seeing as Facebook is the 7th most trafficked site on the internet (2nd most popular social networking site, after MySpace) and apparently shares the number 2 spot with "beer" as the popular thing to do on campus (after the iPod in the number 1 spot, of course), it's certainly a significant partnering for Apple to make and spread the iTunes love to both those who have never tried it and those who already use it alike.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for people to legally discover and enjoy music on the iTunes Music Store through their favorite social directory." "iTunes is the most popular digital music service in the world and we are excited to offer this exclusive giveaway of 10 million music samplers from iTunes," said Owen Van Natta, COO of Facebook. "We're always striving to provide people with the things they care most about, and with over half a million bands listed on Facebook we know that listening to and downloading music is an integral part of our users' lives."

FaceBook's dive into iTunes could be seen as an attempt to compete with its #1 rival, MySpace, which has been known and used widely for bands and fans to schmooze with each other and spread the musical love for many years. David Chartier tells me that all you've gotta do to get the iTunes hookup is to visit Facebook and look for the pretty banner. Unfortunately, it seems like Facebook knows how to detect absolutely ancient (read: 25-year-old) alumni and weed them out of the iTunes queue, because I've been refreshing my Facebook home page for the last 20 minutes and have gotten nothing! The promotion is available to all Facebook and iTunes users on both the Mac and the PC.
